Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by the brain in humans and animals and regulates sleep and wakefulness. Darkness causes the body to produce Melatonin, which causes sleepiness, signalling to the body to that it is time to sleep. Exposure to blue light can suppress the secretion of Melatonin due to it replicating the effects of daytime.
Melatonin plays a huge role on our health. Melatonin helps to limit the active, energetic hormones in your system, allowing our body to sleep and regenerate. Melatonin is necessary to maintain a regular and healthy circadian rhythm.
Blue light is a part of the light spectrum operating between 400-500 nanometers (nm). Blue light is emitted from all artificial light sources including computer screens, TV screens, cell phones, tablets and light bulbs. Although referred to as 'blue light', it may not always appear visibly blue.
Blue light has a very short wavelength, and so produces a higher amount of energy.
Recent scientific studies have shown exposure to the blue light spectrum may cause serious long-term damage to your eyes and suppress the production of melatonin which in turn causes serious sleeping and health issues for people.

We are surrounded by artificial blue light every day and sometimes, without knowing. All artificial, electric-powered lighting produced some level of blue light, even if it doesn't look 'blue'.
The most common sources of artificial blue light include;

Research shows that blue light between 400 and 450nm causes retina damage and that blue and green light between 450 and 530nm suppresses the production of melatonin which in-turn causes sleep issues.
Many glasses that claim to be blue light blocking glasses on the market are just orange or red tinted glasses. These glasses don't have any testing done to show which wavelengths of light are actually being blocked and provide only a very small amount of protection against blue light.
Many other Glasses available have clear lenses and these just don't cut it for blue light protection. Typically, they only filter out a small portion of blue light, usually 10% - 20%. Some decide to take their measurement at 1/2 way through the blue light spectrum and then claim they block 50%! So be mindful of the language used. Blocking 50% at 400 to 450nm but then letting in 70-90% from 450-500nm is not blocking 50% of blue light! These may only be slightly beneficial for eye strain but will not have any benefits in preserving melatonin and improving sleep.

We have found there are now many companies offering glasses which are very focused on providing trendy and fashionable frames, the issue with these is they allow light to enter the eyes from the sides of the glasses which makes the glasses very ineffective. You may look good but your still not blocking the harmful light from entering your eyes. The other issue is being fashionable and trendy comes at a much higher price, but its does not actually do a better job!
